Chapter 17

“I’ve called it in,” Apollo announced, putting away his phone. “The police and Coast Guard are already on their way over, so you might as well start talking before they get here.”

The man sat against the wall, hands limp in his lap. He seemed indifferent about the situation as his gaze flickered between Quinn and Apollo. His half-lidded eyes were a clear indicator that he was more fatigued than he was concerned about the mess he walked into.

Eventually, he managed a small shrug. “I was hired.”

“Hired for what, exactly?” Quinn pressed.

“Someone wanted me to steal some art from this place. I didn’t ask too many questions about it. Money is money, you know? I’m not one to turn down some easy cash.”

“Yeah, this was definitely a job that could get you some easy cash,” Apollo repeated under his breath. “Who was the person who sent you?”

The man laughed, shaking his head.

“You already admitted you were hired. Might as well tell us who it was.”

“Hey, you guys only have me for breaking and entering,” the man pointed out with a raised finger. “I don’t have to disclose anything else if I don’t want to. What’s that law called, again? Miranda’s Law?”

“Miranda Rights,” Apollo corrected. “You’re making this more difficult than it needs to be. Why don’t you just confess? I’m sure the police will be more lenient with you if you just cooperated.”

“Really?” The man sat up straighter. “What if we make a deal? If you guys manage to help me get a lighter sentence, I’ll tell you who sent me to this house in the first place.”

Quinn scoffed. “You’re joking, right?”

“Not at all, I’m a man of my word,” he replied, holding a hand over his heart. “Besides, it would make things easier for everyone involved, don’t you think?”

“There’s no need for that. I already have an idea who the person responsible is,” she said, turning to Apollo. “Who else was interested in the Garfields’ art pieces? I bet Pearl Donovan was involved. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was the one who paid this guy to break in here.”

“Hey, wait,” the man stammered. “You’ve got it all wrong. How did you–”

“Save it,” Apollo interrupted, shooting him an icy glare. The police sirens became more prominent. “I’ll let the officers take over once they make it here.”

Outside, a crack of lightning was followed by booming thunder. Rain poured over the region in heavy pelts, making Quinn hug herself a little tighter. Thankfully, one of the police officers brought along a spare poncho she was able to borrow.

Apollo and Quinn watched as they escorted the man away, who was still trying to explain himself. He wasn’t as nonchalant in attitude this time around.

“I’m going to talk to Pearl tomorrow,” Apollo said.

“Good. See if she admits to anything.”

“You don’t want to come along? You usually do.”

“Not this time,” Quinn replied, already making the move to leave. “I’m pretty exhausted, but keep me updated on what happens.”

Apollo was silent as he watched her leave.
